W. Saint-Lamar is a physician and self-taught visual artist who first immersed himself in painting in March 2022. Drawing from his experiences as an emergency physician during the COVID-19 pandemic, his work reflects a deep emotional resonance with life, loss, and the human spirit. Using bold and expressive colors—such as red, gold, blue, and yellow—Saint-Lamar seeks to convey powerful, spoken emotions through his acrylic and oil pastel compositions on canvas.
Inspired by artists like Jacob Lawrence, Horace Pippin, Henri Matisse, Vincent van Gogh, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the expressionist movement, Saint-Lamar embraces vivid color and instinctive mark-making. He began painting at the age of 55 as a way to process the grief and emotional weight of the pandemic. Without formal training, he relies on intuition and a love for storytelling through visual form.
His work invites open interpretation, offering viewers space to find personal meaning and connection—an intentional hallmark of his emerging artistic voice.
