Soraya Tohidi is a Canadian artist of Persian, Russian, and French heritage whose richly layered work reflects a life shaped by global experiences. Born and raised in Congo-Zaire, she spent her teenage years in communist Laos and later chose to raise her children in China. These diverse cultural landscapes have deeply influenced her creative voice, infusing her art with vibrant colors and a profound respect for nature’s quiet, transformative processes.
Living with fibromyalgia and navigating personal loss introduced a new emotional depth to her practice—inviting both contrast and clarity. Art became a sanctuary where she could transcend pain and reconnect with beauty, light, and inner joy. Flowers, in particular, emerged as a central subject in her work for their gentle resilience, capacity to heal, and enduring ability to inspire joy.
Often working on repurposed or abandoned canvases, Soraya embraces imperfection and reinvention as essential parts of her creative process. Like a lotus rising from the mud, her paintings emerge through layered textures and organic transformation, celebrating renewal and the power of becoming. Through each piece, she seeks to reflect the universal potential for growth, healing, and hope.
