The patches of prairie near Lake Pepin on the east side of the Mississippi River remain a vestige to this once vast ecosystem. Game trails wind through the tall grass, which had turned a peachy rose the prior fall. The rolling hills of the driftless zone hide behind the curtain of moisture in the air. As I painted this piece standing in the tall grass, the birds sung and the growing grasses emitted a wonderful scent suggesting renewal. Enveloped in this moment, optimism survives.
