This ubiquitous scene to the upper Midwest defies its origins. The Dead River (named for its orange color) in Upper Michigan was dammed in the late 1800’s to produce hydroelectric power generation and water storage. The basin remains surrounded by rocky cliffs and coniferous forests. Nature has healed the basin over the decades to give rise to beautiful vistas, abundant plant and animal life, and unsullied cold northern waters. Change is inevitable.
