The cut-over areas of a coniferous forest regrow with random species, depending upon whether fire is able to open the pinecones to distribute seeds. Yet man desires order and maximum growth conditions when replanting trees. The young conifers receive maximum sun and moisture when planted in rows. Aesthetically, however, the human eye desires variety along with rhythm. If I ran the zoo – I’d only allow drunken planters to push the tiny trees into the waiting ground.
